Radford Army Ammunition Plant
Radford, VA

New River Electrical Corporation has recently participated in rehabilitation of the TNT plant located inside the Radford Army Ammunitions Plant. The TNT plant has not been in operation since the mid-1980s. It is the only plant in the United States capable of producing TNT. The majority of the rehabilitation has taken place in 2004 and 2005. It was an estimated cost of $130 million total of all trades to complete the rehabilitation.

The Radford Army Ammunitions Plant is the nation’s largest manufacturer of propellant. It was build at the beginning of World War II. The plant is still owned by the government but today is operated by a civilian contractor. The plant is well spread over its 6,800 acres and employees over 1000 workers today.

New River answers the call in Oklahoma
Tulsa, OK

New River Electrical Corporation was one of the many utility contractors that answered the call when Oklahoma suffered its worst power outage in the states’ history.   Mr. Ike Poe, a project manager in our Overhead Transmission and Distribution department, wrote about New River’s experience in the following article from the corporate newsletter.

On Monday December 10th AEP called requesting overhead line crews to assist them in system restoration due to damages from an ice storm that lingered several days in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area.  At first AEP was requesting our Columbus based line crews but after further assessments requested our central Ohio based Co-op crews as well.  General Foreman Robert Dorsey arranged all of his Columbus based crews while General Foremen Matt Gibeaut and Josh Hopkins obtained releases and dispersed their Co-op crews.  By Monday afternoon NRE obtained releases for a total of 21 overhead line crews, totaling 81 men and were in route for Tulsa.

After another round of ice precipitation Monday night AEP had an estimated 300,000 customers out of power in the Tulsa area.  811 miles later NRE’s 21 crews arrived in Tulsa early Wednesday morning ready to get to work focusing on “getting the lights back on.”  With wide-spread damage to our mid-western states due to this storm it is unclear how long the restoration process will take however, it is clear that New River Electrical will once again play a vital role in restoring power to thousands of homes and businesses.  I want to personally express another “job-well-done” to all of our line crews for their speedy response as well as wish all of them a safe return.

Bath County, VA 500kv GIS Replacement Project
Bath County, VA

This project was one of the most complex and challenging to be undertaken by New River Electrical Corporation’s Substation Division.  The location was an existing 500kV GIS substation located on the tenth story roof of a pump storage hydro station.  The compact site was only 40ft wide by 125ft long.  The assignment was to completely replace five 500kV GIS breakers and all their associated GIS ring bus, PT’s, CT’s, GOAB switches, ground switches, control wiring, control cabinets, and support steel.  All of this was to be accomplished during sequential bus section outages with no generation outage.

The schedule mandated working two shifts with many complex crane lifts and rigging maneuvers in order to place the new equipment within the close confines of the work site, all the while maintaining the required close 4mm alignment tolerances necessitated by the GIS equipment specifications.  The project was successfully completed on time and under budget through the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006.
